Ten lucky sixth graders participated in a six week after school enrichment program to investigate the importance of soil conservation. Student's researched the various layers of soil, and the importance of conserving soil, as well as, the importance of soil to our society. Student's conducted an experiment to investigate how various soil mediums affect the growth of tomato seeds. Student's were able to make predictions, and draw conclusions over the six weeks, most were even able to take their plants home and continue to care for them. These student's also participated in the Freehold Soil Conservatory soil poster contest to illustrate the importance of soil. This years theme was; Dig Deeper: Mysteries in the Soil. Student's discovered many fascinating facts about soil; soil is a natural water purifier, soil provides a habitat for billions of amazing organisms, soil supplies most of the antibiotics used to fight disease, and soil is the basis of our nation's agroecosystems. It takes between 500-1,000 years for 1 inch of soil to form, so please... conserve, conserve, conserve! The students worked hard, had fun, and did an amazing job! Click above headline for photos.
